Weekly Art Challenge - Zentangles

Hi, it's Jenn this week bringing you our challenge. Inspiration Avenue is changing a bit. We are changing a few ways we do things. Since we are now using Mr. Linky for submitting your art to the weekly challenge, we have eliminated the wrap up on Sundays. We figure you all just click through to everyone's blog from the Linky tool anyway so the Sunday post has been eliminated. To kind of replace those posts we have a few new ideas in the near future. We'll be talking about those additions to the IA repertoire soon! Stay tuned for some exciting new things.

Ok, onto our challenge!

It's Jenn again and this week I'm so wanting to doodle so lets doodle together! Doodling with repetitive patterns called Zentangling, has a meditative quality to it. Although doodling is as old as the pencil, Zentangle art is a new form of art created by Maria and Rick several years ago. Originally (and still today it's taught this way) zentangles were drawn on a paper tile about 4 inches square. They started with a line or "string" then filled in repetitive patterns using the sections the string creates. With the explosion of this new kind of doodling artists have expanded how they use zentangles, now the patterns have found their way off the tile and into images. The zentangle has moved from repetitive doodling to amazing art.

Many people who didn't think they could make art have found that zentangling allows them to be truly creative & artistic. There is a huge array of official patterns, many of which can be learned here. The types of patterns continue to grow and become more complicated and there is a huge community of zentanglers. One can take official classes to become an official zentangle teacher then you can teach others how to do this creative art.

There is now art called Zendalas, a combination of Mandalas (a meditative concentric design of patterns based on the Buddhist sacred art form symbolic of the Universe) and Zentangles. Both are meditative and based on patterns so it's a beautiful combination.

Here are some spectacular, creative zentangle examples...

Let these examples inspire you to get out your paper, pencils and Micron black pens and make some doodles. I can't wait to see what you all create. Link up when you have some cool art to show.

Hope you're all having a great summer!
Best,

is there a reason for not having a 'perfectly pink' gallery this week? i was looking forward to seeing everyone's entry in all their pinkly glory...

I love the examples of zentangles you've added here. I have much on my plate right now...or I'd participate. Maybe next time! Sure do wish the Featured Magazine was digital so I could get it here in Colombia. Sniff.

I ZEN, but don't tangle, so I am going to sit this one out. Although I really admire the art and artists who can work their magic with it!

Can't wait to see the results!

Hi there, you have used one of my images - the zentangle journal - and credited it to the Diva. The original source is: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-zentangle. I'd be grateful if you would correct your caption. Thanks
